Aqueduct Cocktail

Aqueduct: Vodka, Curaçao, Apricot Brandy, Lime Juice

Why on earth would you make an Aqueduct with anything but blue curaçao?

Vodka, Blue Curaçao, Apricot Brandy, Lime Juice, Orange Peel

I don't know the history of this cocktail, but the name has to have something to do with the blue liquor trapped in a glass like a stream of water in an aqueduct, right? I'm not sure I understand why some recipes out there call for white or orange curaçao.

If the name of the drink isn't enough to convince you to go blue, surely the end result will do the trick. Take a look at that exotic thing!

DP had been looking forward to this one for awhile now... Apparently blue cocktails bring back memories of Darryl's in North Carolina, a now-defunct chain that had its heyday in the 1980s, when a blue drink served with a plastic whale on top could really draw in the crowds.

In fact, if you are looking for the perfect cocktail for your next 80s Party, the Aqueduct is exactly what you need. Check out that radioactive glow! Throw some black light on your bar, and you're all set.

This cocktail is not just about looks, however - it also does pretty well in the flavor category. This is the first recipe in the Guide to use vodka, and that makes it a fairly strong drink. The taste, however, is a subtle mix of apricot (which predominated in my glass) and bitter orange (which predominated for DP).

The color is so unnatural that it might seem difficult to pin down an appropriate season to drink the Aqueduct. This door on Tradd Street, however, convinces me that Christmastime is the right time. There's something about the combination of blue and oranges that works for me, and I'll drink to that!
Ingredients:

1 1/2 oz vodka
1/4 oz Curaçao
1/4 oz apricot brandy
1/2 oz lime juice

Shake with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with orange peel.
